A record sleeve and gated record sleeve printed for an independent record label, headquartered in London, was entered into the 2022 Antalis Creative Power Awards by Delga Press. The awards reward and celebrate creativity, and this project stood out because of its fluorescent orange finish. The project made it through to the final stage of the awards competing against 5 other projects.
This project was litho printed in 4-colour onto Curious Matter Goya White by Arjowiggins Creative Papers whilst adding a special 5th colour, the Fluorescent "Orange". The result is a striking and eye-catching product to stimulate all senses! Whilst the project didn’t win the award we are very proud to have made it to the list of finalists along with some very powerful printed pieces.
Printing with fluorescent ink.
Fluorescent inks are printed as a spot colour. They add an extra layer to the impact of the design, by re-emitting light they appear more luminous.
Fluorescent inks sit well on coated paper as these prevent the ink from absorbing into the material and allow the colours. Paper and board that is white allows the light to be reflected back into the ink making it more luminous.
In terms of colour options, there are 7 basic Pantone neon colours which can be utilised on their own or in conjunction with other Pantone base inks to create a multitude of brightly glowing colours for your artwork.
Fluorescent inks, although bright, have very low lightfastness and will fade in natural daylight so it’s important to protect the final product from these conditions and consider how the product will be used before deciding to use fluorescent inks.
A product such as a record sleeve is ideal for using fluorescent ink on as it will most likely be kept protected on a shelf but a product that is intended to sit in a shop window would not be. Products with a limited life span such as flyers, posters and invitations are also ideal items to use fluorescent ink as they are unlikely to fade before the product has reached the end of its lifecycle.
